Background
A powerful earthquake
struck the NWFP and Azad Kashmir on the morning of October
8, 2005 leaving widespread destruction. According to estimates
about 73,000 human losses were reported, more than 70,000
received injuries and over 04 million were left homeless or
displaced. The Eastern Districts of NWFP namely Abbottabad,
Mansehra, Battagram, Kohistan and Shangla were heavily hit
suffering considerable and extensive damage to economic assets
and Infrastructure.
In order to mitigating
the sufferings of the earthquake affectees, two prong strategy
was adopted by the Government of Pakistan, comprises of Relief
and Reconstruction phases. 
About
DRUs
In order to streamline the process of implementation of the
reconstruction and rehabilitation in the areas affected by
the earthquake of 08 October, 2005 in NWFP, the Government
of NWFP established and notify the “District Reconstruction
Units (DRUs)” in the affected Districts of Abbottabad,
Mansehra, Battagram, Shangla and Kohistan. DRUs are autonomous
units, headed by Program Managers and are responsible for
the planning, coordination, financial management and supervision
of all ERRA-funded activities in the districts.
